On the news tonight there was a story about three teenage boys who've been camped outside a Best Buy since Monday. I didn't even need to hear the rest of the story, I already knew where it was headed. Don't get me wrong, I love a good sale just as much as the next person. But there's this rather significant holiday that occurs tomorrow and it's hard for me to understand why anyone would willingly choose to spend it in a store parking lot. Especially if they're lucky enough to have a turkey to eat and family members to spend it with.
But instead of making assumptions or jumping to conclusions, I picked up each my kids and hugged them as tight as I could. Because even if they're too young to know that tomorrow is a holiday, or that it's the day Uncle Lucas breaks open the chocolate turkey with his head, or that after dinner we all watch A Christmas Vacation, I know how incredibly grateful I am to have them and to be their Mom.
I can't help but wonder in years to come if those teenage boys will even remember what they bought? At some point tomorrow, I just hope they pick up the phone or come home with their shopping bags in tow, and remember to give thanks for the things they have and the people who love them.
