In need of a trim

I feel like I should put a sign on each of my kids that says: Haircut Needed, Please Help.

I promise they don't always look this forlorn.  And really, their hair isn't that bad, is it?

Fin could get by for at least another week if she'd just let me put a barrette in her hair.  So far she's not a big fan of the super girly things like headbands, bows, or tights.  Bub has what we're calling "hockey hair".  We come from a family of skaters (on my mom's side), so he's following in some talented foot steps.  Plus there's no way I'm touching those locks in the back.  We'll give the front a trim, but the curls are here to stay.

Besides being in need of a trim, we do keep them otherwise well groomed.  Fin loves her bathtime and will splash around and play until her toes start to look like raisins.  Bub tends to need some coaxing to get in the water, which usually means dh gets in with him.

I'm responsible for all nail cutting, and as dh says "always has been, always will be."  Which is fine by me, cause that means I get a "pass" on something in the future.  I'm thinking when one of them pukes for the first time (and I'm talking something more than just formula spit-up), he gets to hold the bucket.

As far as their attire goes, think Hanna Andersson meets babyGap meets Gymboree.  And what they say is true -- girls clothes are much cuter and much easier to come by.  It's definitely harder to find good looking boys clothes.  But I can cheat and call up my relatives in Holland (my mom was born in Harlem and all of her relatives still live there or in neighboring cities) if I need something extra special.  Cause you know they get all of the newest and trendiest clothes over there way before us.  In fact, the shirt Fin is wearing is from Hema, a department store mecca that is unlike anything we have here.

Bottom line, even if I don't always have time to blow dry my hair or put on mascara (I can count on one hand the amount of times I've worn make-up of any kind in the past 13 1/2 months), at least my kids are clean, groomed, and smartly dressed.  Although there has been a time or two (or three) when it's been close to 5 pm and one (or both) of them was still wearing their pajama top from the night before.  I very clearly remember saying, "Heck, leave it on and they can wear it to bed again tonight.  Who's gonna know anyway?"  I'm pretty sure that was my alter ego talking, the one who doesn't get nearly as much sleep as she needs and has (for the time being) thrown rational thought out the window.  And as for who's gonna know -- just anyone who reads my blog!

I digress.  Sorry.

Oh yes, the much needed haircuts.  So I guess all I need now is 1.) the time, and 2.) to somehow convince each of them to sit in a chair (never mind if it's a rocket ship or a pink jeep) and let a stranger come at them with a pair of scissors.  No wonder I haven't tackled this particular "first" quite yet.

Note to self, in all the mayhem fun this is sure to be, remember to take home locks of their hair.  For the baby books of course!
