I talked with Dr. T today and she didn't seem overly concerned about Bub's elevated APL. In her opinion a high APL can also be post-viral. Meaning he had a bug of some sort, and now that he's getting over it the level should start to go back down.
It's perplexing (and a bit infuriating) that two doctors, both of whom have years of experience and are considered to be at the top of their respective fields, have such completely different interpretations. Dr. P says it's from being malnourished and he's worried about muscle loss, while Dr. T says it's nothing to worry about.
They did agree that something else would have come back abnormal if it was indeed a disorder or cancer of some kind. So at least we can be relieved about.
The bigger issue, which no one seems to be addressing with anywhere near the amount of concern and passion we think it deserves, is that Bub still isn't eating. Regardless of his blood results, the little guy has barely taken more than a few bites in almost five weeks. He is drinking a few more ounces than he was a week ago, but without food to go along with it ... I just don't see how his health is going to get any better.
As of right now he's the same weight he was at his 9 month well baby checkup. If you look at that on a graph, it's going to look something like this:
x

Not exactly the curve of a thriving child, and not something that is allowing any of us to sleep very well at night.
Not exactly the curve of a thriving child, and not something that is allowing any of us to sleep very well at night.
So we continue to do our best to convince Bub it's ok to eat, we hug and kiss and play with him, and we wait as patiently as possible until our appointment at DCH on Thursday.
