18 Month Update

I just couldn't resist more bath pictures!

Bub and Fin are FULL of personality these days.  They shrug their shoulders when they can't find something.  They laugh when we laugh.  They try to repeat what we say.  And they have unwavering opinions when it comes to .... well, just about everything.

Bub is still going to therapy once a week.  His body awareness and tolerance for new textures has increased significantly.  One example, a couple weeks ago we gave him a ball with strings attached to it.  As soon as we handed it to him, he immediately pulled his hands away, splayed his fingers and grimaced.  This is a fairly typical reaction for kids with texture and sensory issues.  Fast forward to today, we gave him the same ball, he picked it up (with both hands), hugged it to his chest and carried it all the way across the room to me.  It was a really big accomplishment!

We offer him a new food every couple days.  Most of the time he shakes his head "No" or just walks away, but we keep trying.  He's never had anything with seeds (unless you count bananas), but last week he tried strawberries for the first time.  I put a few pieces in a bowl and casually handed it to him.  I find it works best not to put any pressure on the fact that it's a new food, just give it to him and look away.  If he does nothing, that's ok.  But instead he took the bowl of strawberries and sat down on the floor.  I was pretending to do something in the kitchen, but really I was watching his every move out of the corner of my eye.  He smelled them, touched one of the pieces with the tip of his finger, and then set the bowl down and walked away.  About 30 seconds later he came back and peered inside the bowl.  I figured that was the end of it, but he sat back down, picked up of the strawberry pieces and put it in his mouth.  And he didn't stop there -- he ate the entire bowl!

Fin continues to keep us on our toes.  She is energetic, emotional (some might say "moody"), and likes things to be a certain way.  Let's just say things are never boring around our house.

She might appear shy and clingy if meeting her in person for the first time.  But spend a few minutes on the ground with her, ask her to play the harmonica for you, or better yet ask her to dance, and any image you had of a shrinking violet is long gone.

Perhaps my favorite things about Fin right now ... her facial expressions.  They are priceless!  We've even named some of them.  The Smirk (her trademark).  The Shy Smile.  The Sideways Glance.  The Grimace (which only lasts a few seconds before we all start laughing).  The Sad Face.  And finally, the Scowl.  I swear she can contort her face to fit any mood or situation.

Above all, she is sweet and loyal, especially to her Daddy.  Even though he puts her to bed almost every night, part of her bedtime routine (right before he lays her down) is to kiss a picture of him that sits on her night stand.  *Aaaahhhhh.*

Bub DISLIKES ....

- When the blinds are drawn and he can't see outside
- Riding in the B.OB stroller (much to my dismay)
- Socks that are either too thin or too thick
