Another one bites the dust

Bub and Fin have a new pediatrician.  Yes, another one.  Their third in just as many years to be exact.  But I think we finally found the one!

Whereas we were actively looking for pediatrician #2, Dr. J is the result of new insurance.  Even so, I'm not at all sad about leaving Dr. P.  Despite Dr. P's promises to help us with Bub's feeding issues, it quickly became clear he didn't have the qualities we were looking for in a pediatrician.  He made very little effort to get to know us.  He didn't follow up after Fin's eye surgery (even when we came in months later for a different reason, he didn't even ask how she was doing).  And just recently when I brought my kids in for a cold that had been hanging on for a long time, he actually made me feel like I was wasting his time.  (I think his exact words were, "So they just have a cold?")  Then he did something i still can't believe.  He told me to pick one of the kids to do a strep test, and if it came back positive he would just go ahead and treat both of them.  Prescribing antibiotics to a toddler for an illness they might not even have ... seriously????  After that appointment, I knew we'd NEVER be coming back.  So the fact that we were changing insurances just makes leaving that much easier.

We started with Kaiser on July 1, and 5 days later had an appointment with Dr. J (aka pediatrician #3).  The office is located less that five minutes from our house, has its own pharmacy, and best of all, I liked Dr. J right away.  She listened, asked appropriate questions, was optimistic, and didn't mind when (not once, but three times) I had to interrupt the appointment to take the kids potty.  I was impressed with her bedside manner (something Dr. P lacked in every possible way) and her easy interaction with all of us.  She let each of them touch and play with her stethoscope, a subtle gesture that earned her major brownie points, especially with Bub.  She was sweet, nurturing, and I didn't at all feel rushed or undermined.  In short, she's everything I imagined a pediatrician should be.

Being that it was technically a new patient appointment, we were there for almost an hour.  We talked about their histories and then Dr. J did all the normal things, checked their ears (which she told them might feel like "butterfly kisses"), throat, spine and reflexes.  She also referred Fin to a new ophthalmologist and suggested we do a blood draw on Bub to make sure he's not anemic (normal protocol for kids who are picky eaters).

Percentages looked like this:

Fin
Weight - 35 lbs  91%
Height - 3', 3"  96%
Head - 19.49 in  76%

Bub
Weight - 28 lbs, 12 oz  27%
Height - 3', 2"  78%
Head - 19.49 in  50%

And now, since you read down this far, some fun pictures ...
